According to the Federal Reserve report released on September 11, 2026, the net worth of US households reached a record $196 trillion in the second quarter of 2026. This represents a quarterly increase of $12.8 trillion, significantly higher than the $113 billion gain recorded in the previous quarter.
The growth was primarily driven by equity holdings, which increased by approximately $10.7 trillion. Real estate assets contributed an additional $1.1 trillion to the total. Equities now account for 46.6% of household financial assets and 34% of total assets.
Market performance supported these gains, with the S&P 500 rising 14.9% and the Nasdaq increasing by 21.4% during the quarter. Additionally, the ratio of net worth to disposable personal income reached a record 828% in the second quarter of 2026.
The distribution of this wealth remains highly concentrated. The top 10% of US households hold approximately 87% of all equity assets, while the top 1% possess more than half of the total household wealth. Consequently, the majority of the quarterly gains benefited a small portion of the population.
