Blockchain analysts have tracked a significant transaction involving a wallet linked to the US government. The wallet transferred over 12,267 BTC, which was valued at more than $1 billion at the time of the report. This movement occurred shortly after the government transferred BTC worth $770 million to a Coinbase Prime wallet.
Data from Arkham Research indicates that the wallet is associated with the recovery of assets stolen during the 2016 Bitfinex hack. In that incident, hackers originally misappropriated 119,756 BTC. The identity of the recipient for the latest transfer remains unconfirmed, and officials from the US Marshals and the Department of Justice have not provided comments.
As of 2026, estimates indicate that the US government holds approximately 328,372 BTC, accumulated through various criminal investigations and asset seizures. While President Donald Trump signed an executive order in March 2025 to create a strategic Bitcoin and crypto reserve, the legislative process to codify this initiative into federal law is currently ongoing.
