On October 8, 2026, a US government wallet transferred 12,267.02 BTC, valued at approximately $1.01 billion, to new unlabeled addresses. Data from Arkham indicates these funds originated from a wallet associated with the 2016 Bitfinex hack.

The day prior to this transaction, wallets linked to Bitfinex and FTX moved about 3,200 BTC, worth roughly $264 million, alongside $119 million in USDT to Coinbase Prime deposit addresses. Coinbase Prime provides custody and trading services for institutional clients.

The US government currently holds over 94,000 BTC connected to the 2016 breach, with total government digital asset holdings estimated at $25.5 billion. The 2016 Bitfinex hack involved the theft of 119,754 BTC in total.

A March 2025 executive order created a Strategic Bitcoin Reserve, mandating that forfeited Bitcoin be held long-term instead of being sold at auction. The October 8 transfer did not involve an exchange, aligning with this retention policy.
