The US government's Bitcoin holdings have decreased in paper value by $16 billion since reaching a peak in October 2025. At that time, the government's stash was valued at approximately $40.7 billion, with Bitcoin trading near $124,000.

As of early October 2026, the government holds between 319,000 and 328,000 BTC. With current prices ranging from $82,000 to $83,000, the total valuation is estimated between $26 billion and $28 billion.

White House crypto advisor David Sacks noted that previous sales of seized Bitcoin generated $366 million. If those assets had been retained, their current value would be approximately $17 billion, representing an opportunity cost of $16 to $17 billion.

Routine sales of forfeited assets ceased following a March 2025 executive order that created a Strategic Bitcoin Reserve. In the first week of October 2026, government-linked wallets transferred over $1 billion in Bitcoin to Coinbase Prime custody addresses for administrative purposes.
