The US Army has officially integrated its first group of permanent enlisted space personnel. Starting October 1, more than 600 soldiers transitioned into the new 40D Tactical Space Operations Specialist military occupational specialty. The selection process involved nearly 3,000 applicants, from which the most qualified candidates were chosen to fill these permanent roles.

Previously, the Army managed space operations by temporarily reassigning soldiers from other branches, which often resulted in a loss of expertise. The new 40D designation, alongside the Space Operations Branch established in June, aims to consolidate career paths. This structure aligns with the 2024 Army Space Vision, which focuses on integrating commercial and joint space capabilities.

The initiative also supports the broader objective of countering adversary space threats to protect friendly forces. These enlisted specialists will now work alongside Functional Area 40A Space Operations Officers, a role that has existed within the service since 1999. This move marks a shift toward normalizing space operations as a permanent military career track.
