A Manhattan federal jury found cybersecurity consultant Jonathan Spalletta guilty of computer fraud and money laundering. The verdict follows two attacks on the decentralized finance exchange Uranium Finance in April 2021, which led to the platform's collapse.
During the first exploit on April 8, 2021, Spalletta stole $1.4 million by abusing a smart-contract rewards function. A second attack on April 28, 2021, drained approximately $53.3 million from 26 liquidity pools.
Between 2021 and 2023, Spalletta laundered $26 million through the Tornado Cash mixing service. He also purchased high-end collectibles, including a Magic: The Gathering Black Lotus card, a Roman coin, and a fragment of fabric from a Wright brothers airplane.
Law enforcement seized $31 million in crypto on February 24, 2025, and recovered collectibles worth over $3 million from the defendant's home. Spalletta faces a maximum of 30 years in prison, with sentencing set for February 16, 2027.
