UniCredit, the second-largest bank in Italy, is currently in preliminary talks with technology partners to develop a comprehensive suite of digital asset services. The bank aims to provide custody, brokerage, and trading capabilities, as well as tokenized investment products and stablecoin-backed fixed-income securities.

The bank has already taken several steps in the digital finance sector. In December 2025, it issued Italy’s first tokenized minibond on a public blockchain, valued at €5 million. Additionally, in April 2026, UniCredit acquired a 16% stake in the tokenization platform BlockInvest for €4 million and secured a minority stake in the German lending platform VC Trade.

UniCredit has also provided professional investors with structured products linked to the BlackRock iShares Bitcoin Trust ETF. Furthermore, the bank is participating in the Qivalis consortium, which is developing a euro-denominated stablecoin expected to launch by late 2026 in compliance with the EU's MiCA regulatory framework.

Over the past year, the institution has invested approximately €9 million in strategic digital asset initiatives. While the bank operates across 13 countries, it acknowledges that current discussions are at an early stage, noting the technical complexities of integrating legacy banking systems with blockchain infrastructure.
