The Unicode Consortium has officially released the Unicode 18.0 standard, expanding the total character count to 172,808. This update introduces 13,007 new characters to the global encoding system, facilitating better text processing across various software platforms, databases, and operating systems.
The primary focus of this release is the inclusion of 11,328 Seal Script characters, which account for approximately 87% of all new additions. Seal Script, historically standardized during the Qin Dynasty, is now formally supported for digital documentation, retrieval, and rendering within compatible fonts and text-based applications.
Beyond historical scripts, Unicode 18.0 incorporates new numerical characters for the Jurchen script and Proto-Cuneiform. The update also introduces 9 new emojis. Users should note that these emojis will not appear simultaneously across all devices, as their availability depends on individual operating system and application support.
