Uncloud is a container orchestration tool designed to manage multiple Docker hosts while maintaining Docker Compose as the primary management interface. It acts as a lightweight alternative to Kubernetes or Docker Swarm for clusters of moderate size.
The system operates without a central control plane. Instead, it utilizes Corrosion, a distributed state store based on SQLite that employs CRDT models for replication. This architecture ensures eventual consistency, allowing nodes to function independently during network partitions.
To enable communication between containers across different hosts, Uncloud implements a WireGuard-based mesh network. Each node is assigned a dedicated subnet, and the system integrates this with the Docker bridge to provide a unified L3 network for all containers.
Service discovery is handled by an internal DNS system. Each node runs a local DNS server that resolves .internal domain names. For external traffic, Uncloud offers a managed DNS service that integrates with the Caddy proxy to automate routing for applications.
