The UK Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) has officially opened the application process for crypto firms seeking authorization. This move marks a significant step in the transition toward a comprehensive regulatory framework for cryptoassets in the country.

Companies aiming to maintain their operations in the UK must submit their applications no later than February 28, 2027. The new regulatory regime is officially scheduled to take effect on October 25, 2027.

The upcoming framework mandates strict requirements regarding consumer protection, the safeguarding of customer assets, market integrity, and financial resilience. Authorization is not automatic, and firms must demonstrate full compliance with these standards.

During the transition period, existing firms that have submitted their applications may continue providing services and onboarding new customers while their requests are under review, provided the FCA has not issued a final decision by the start date of the new regime.

To assist businesses, the regulator is providing pre-application support and hosting webinars. Firms that fail to meet the established requirements will be prohibited from offering regulated cryptoasset services within the UK.
