The UK Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) is currently evaluating potential exemptions from existing fund regulations for specific tokenized gold products and related market infrastructure. These proposals are scheduled for presentation on Monday.
The initiative aims to foster innovation within the bullion market and support London's standing as a global financial hub. This move comes as China actively works to establish itself as a competing center for gold trading.
Tokenization is expected to simplify the transfer of physical gold across digital platforms and increase the availability of bullion for use as collateral in financial transactions. The FCA emphasized that no final decisions have been reached.
The UK Treasury and the Bank of England are actively participating in discussions regarding the development of a regulatory framework. Additionally, the Bank of England is reviewing broader rules concerning the use of tokenized assets as collateral.
