The UK government has launched the Scaleup Pathway, an initiative designed to bridge the gap between deep tech research and industrial manufacturing. The program connects innovation ecosystems in WestTech London and the West Midlands to facilitate the commercialization of new technologies and support the growth of domestic companies.

The initiative is convened by Imperial College London and the University of Warwick. It aims to provide startups with access to investment, specialized infrastructure, manufacturing facilities, and supply chains. The project is backed by regional authorities, including the West Midlands Combined Authority, the Greater London Authority, and several local councils.

WestTech London currently hosts 1,000 frontier innovation companies, which generate over £9 billion in annual turnover and employ more than 20,000 people. Meanwhile, the West Midlands contributes over £22 billion annually in manufacturing output, with a strategic focus on battery technology, smart energy systems, and electric light vehicles.

The program involves a broad network of academic institutions, such as the University of Birmingham, Aston University, and Coventry University. It addresses structural challenges that companies face when transitioning from R&D to commercial production, aiming to retain manufacturing capabilities within the UK.

This launch coincides with the West Midlands' preparations for a new reindustrialization strategy. The region plans to integrate various business support and investment initiatives to accelerate industrial renewal and create high-value jobs.
