Canonical has started issuing daily ISO images for Ubuntu 26.10 with amd64v3 support. This initiative follows the company's experimental package archive trials conducted over several previous release cycles. While official plans for the integration of amd64v3 into the final Ubuntu 26.10 release remain unconfirmed, the architecture offers performance improvements over standard amd64 binaries.
The amd64v3 architecture assumes support for newer CPU instruction sets, including AVX, AVX2, BMI2, MOVBE, and FMA. These capabilities are present in Intel processors starting from the Haswell microarchitecture and AMD CPUs based on the Excavator design. The shift allows software to leverage modern hardware features that were previously underutilized by generic builds.
To evaluate the impact on budget hardware, testing was performed on a CHUWI UniBook laptop, priced at $449. The device features an Intel Core 3 304 processor, which includes one performance core and four low-power efficiency cores, paired with 8GB of RAM. The comparison involved running both standard Ubuntu 26.10 amd64 and amd64v3 builds on the same hardware.
