Canonical has released the beta version of Ubuntu 26.10, codenamed Stonking Stingray. The final stable release is scheduled for October 15, following a final freeze on October 8. The distribution is currently available for testing across desktop, server, and official community editions.
The new release features Linux kernel 7.3 and the GNOME 51 desktop environment. Graphics support is handled by the Mesa 26.2 driver stack, which provides improved compatibility for recent Intel, AMD, and integrated GPU platforms. Testing indicates performance gains on Intel Core 3 Wildcat Lake processors compared to the 26.04 LTS version.
A major milestone in this release is the full migration to Rust Coreutils. Essential commands such as cp, mv, and rm have been transitioned from traditional GNU versions to Rust-based implementations to enhance memory safety. Canonical has worked to ensure high compatibility between the new tools and existing system behaviors.
Ubuntu 26.10 introduces improved resource management under memory pressure to prevent system unresponsiveness. The release also lays the groundwork for AI-driven features, including natural voice interaction and speech-to-text capabilities via the Myna project, alongside a simplified installation process for new users.
Hardware support has been expanded to include experimental compatibility for Snapdragon X2 laptops, building upon existing support for Snapdragon X1 devices. Additionally, the system continues to test amd64v3 packages, which are optimized for modern x86-64-v3 instruction sets to leverage the capabilities of newer processors.
