Canonical has officially released Ubuntu 26.10, codenamed Stonking Stingray. As a non-LTS release, the operating system will receive official support for a period of 9 months and serves as a technical transition platform for the upcoming Ubuntu 27.04.
The new version features the Linux 7.3 kernel and the GNOME 51 desktop environment. Graphics performance is supported by the integration of the Mesa 26.2 open-source driver, which improves compatibility for AMD, Intel, and other open-source GPU environments.
A major milestone in this release is the completion of the migration to Rust Coreutils. Canonical has replaced traditional GNU Coreutils components with Rust-based implementations to enhance code security and mitigate potential memory-related vulnerabilities.
Canonical continues to optimize support for Qualcomm Snapdragon X series platforms, specifically the X1 and X2 processors. These updates aim to improve compatibility for ARM-based laptops and facilitate the deployment of Ubuntu on Windows on ARM devices.
The release includes updated compilers, development toolchains, and system libraries. Additionally, all official Ubuntu community flavors, including Kubuntu, Xubuntu, and Ubuntu Kylin, have been updated to align with the new system version.
