Canonical has released Ubuntu 24.04.5 LTS, which serves as the final maintenance version for the 24.04 series. While no further point releases like 24.04.6 are planned, the company will continue to provide security updates for existing users.

The new release integrates all previous security patches and hardware support components. Users performing a fresh installation can download the latest image, while current users can upgrade their systems using standard commands to fetch incremental updates.

Key technical updates include the Hardware Enablement (HWE) stack based on Linux Kernel 7.0, derived from the upcoming Ubuntu 26.04 LTS branch. This update improves compatibility for processors, storage, network hardware, and graphics cards.

The graphics stack has been upgraded to Mesa 26.2, which introduces updated open-source drivers. These changes aim to enhance performance and compatibility for Vulkan, OpenGL, and video acceleration, depending on the specific hardware configuration.

Standard security support for the Ubuntu 24.04 LTS series is scheduled to run until May 31, 2029. Users can extend this coverage until 2034 by subscribing to Ubuntu Pro, which offers free support for up to five devices per account.
