Uber and Pony.ai announced plans to begin road testing Gen-7 autonomous vehicles in London within the coming weeks. The companies intend to integrate these robotaxis into the existing Uber ride-hailing network in the city.
This initiative follows a partnership established earlier in 2026, which saw the launch of a commercial robotaxi service with safety drivers in Zagreb, Croatia. The partners aim to deploy more than 2,000 autonomous vehicles across five European cities.
The London market for autonomous transport is becoming increasingly competitive. Local startup Wayve already operates a service using 15 Ford Mustang Mach-E vehicles, while companies like Baidu and Waymo are exploring operations in the capital.
Operations in London are governed by the UK Automated Vehicles Act and require coordination with Transport for London. Uber continues its strategy of partnering with technology providers rather than developing its own autonomous driving systems.
