The U.S. Senate rejected the Clarity Act, a federal cryptocurrency regulation bill, in a 50-49 vote. The legislation aimed to establish the United States as a leader in digital asset innovation but faced significant opposition from Democratic lawmakers.
Opponents of the bill cited ethical concerns regarding President Donald Trump’s involvement in the crypto industry. Critics pointed to profits generated by his firm, World Liberty Financial, and the memecoin $TRUMP, arguing the bill could facilitate regulatory manipulation for personal gain.
Senator Thom Tillis, who initially voted against the bill, filed a motion to reconsider, keeping the possibility of a future vote open. The legislation remains subject to further refinement, particularly regarding ethics provisions and stablecoin reward regulations.
Industry advocacy group Stand With Crypto, supported by companies like Coinbase Global Inc., stated that voters may consider the outcome of this ballot during the upcoming mid-term elections in November.
