U.S. Bank has launched a pilot project using its dollar-backed stablecoin, USBDC, for cross-border payments between its North American and European entities. The transaction was conducted on the Stellar blockchain, integrating the bank's core finance, risk, and compliance infrastructure.

The pilot program evaluates several key functions, including the minting, payment redemption, payment freezing, and clawback capabilities of the stablecoin. This process also serves to validate the bank's internal digital asset platform, which manages tokenized assets and connects traditional banking systems with blockchain networks.

The broader stablecoin market is currently experiencing a shift. While initial growth was driven by issuance and liquidity, the focus is moving toward interoperability between fragmented ecosystems. This involves the banks, custodians, and payment networks developing systems to move tokenized assets across different platforms.
