President Trump stated on September 13 that the United States should maintain the lowest interest rates globally. He made these comments at the Irish Open in Doonbeg, two days before the Federal Reserve policy meeting scheduled for September 15–16.

The current federal funds rate target range is 3.50% to 3.75%. Trump proposed reducing these rates to 1% or lower, which would mark a decrease of more than 250 basis points. He argued that high rates hinder economic growth and increase the cost of servicing a national debt exceeding $39 trillion.

Market participants anticipate that Fed Chair Kevin Warsh may consider a rate hike due to elevated inflation, rising oil prices, and strong employment data. Trump expressed his stance on social media, threatening to restrict trade with countries where the US has a deficit if rates are not lowered.

White House economic adviser Kevin Hassett noted that the administration might accept a rate increase if economic conditions require it. Investors are currently evaluating the potential impact of the upcoming Fed decision on equity markets, corporate investment, and sectors sensitive to borrowing costs.
