President Donald Trump announced that NASA will launch its first spacecraft equipped with a nuclear propulsion system toward Mars within the next two years. This initiative was unveiled during the UP summit held at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida, marking a shift in the nation's space exploration strategy.

The mission serves as a critical precursor to future crewed expeditions to the Red Planet. This development aligns with the broader Artemis program, which focuses on returning astronauts to the lunar surface and establishing permanent infrastructure there to support long-term operations.

The current schedule for the Artemis program includes testing spacecraft and landing systems in low Earth orbit in 2027, following the Artemis II lunar flyby. A crewed landing on the Moon is planned for early 2028 as part of the Artemis IV mission.

In addition to these technical milestones, the administration introduced the American Declaration of Space Freedom. The document establishes a framework for the United States to conduct research and exploration activities in space, emphasizing open access for national interests.
