Toyota has conducted a durability test for its electric Hilux pickup, recreating a famous stunt from a 2003 Top Gear episode. The company allowed Reddit users to choose between hitting the vehicle with a one-ton wrecking ball or dropping a caravan on it, with the latter option receiving the most support.

The test took place at Bentwaters airfield in Suffolk. A caravan weighing 760 kilograms was dropped from a height of approximately nine meters directly onto the cab of the electric truck. Following the impact, the vehicle sustained only minor bodywork damage, started immediately, and remained fully operational.

The manufacturer emphasized that the electric Hilux is designed to withstand extreme conditions, featuring specific battery protection solutions developed through deep-water and rough-terrain testing. The pickup is currently in its ninth generation and is available with various powertrains, including diesel, gasoline, and upcoming hydrogen fuel cell options.

Since its debut in 1968, Toyota has delivered over 21 million Hilux units globally. Following the caravan drop, the company handed the electric pickup to the Top Gear YouTube channel for further durability testing. Toyota noted that the stunt was performed under controlled conditions on a closed course.
