Toyota Gazoo Racing will enter its hydrogen-powered DKR GR FC Hilux in the Dakar Future Mission 1000 challenge, scheduled for January 2027. The vehicle is designed to cover 621 miles of special stages during the event, which takes place in Saudi Arabia from January 1 to January 15.

The truck utilizes a 2.5-generation fuel cell system, combining second-generation fuel cells with third-generation components. This setup replaces the traditional combustion engine found in the standard Dakar Hilux, emitting only water vapor during operation.

Toyota has secured partnerships with Jameel Motorsport, Denso, Toyo Tires, and IAV to support the project. Jameel Motorsport will provide local logistics, while Denso and IAV assist with technical components and engineering. Toyo Tires will supply its Open Country M/T-R tires.

The program aims to collect data on fuel cell performance under extreme conditions, including high heat, vibration, and sand. These tests are intended to validate technology for a road-going Hilux Fuel Cell model, which Toyota targets for release in 2028 with a 250-mile range.
