Toyota has launched the Toyota Battery Center of North America in Saline, Michigan. The 2,800-square-metre facility serves as a central hub for testing and evaluating battery technologies. It covers the entire development cycle, ranging from raw material procurement to recycling processes.
The new center supports Toyota’s North American production network, which includes a battery plant in Liberty, North Carolina. This plant, which opened in 2025, represents a €14 billion investment and is expected to create 5,100 jobs. It is the company's twelfth manufacturing site in the US.
Engineers at the Michigan facility will develop technologies for hybrid, plug-in hybrid, hydrogen, and battery-electric vehicles. The site aims to improve battery longevity and performance for American driving conditions. Toyota also plans to collaborate with the University of Michigan’s Electric Vehicle Center.
The initiative is part of Toyota’s Multi-Path Strategy, which focuses on offering diverse sustainable mobility solutions. By opening the center to third parties and partnering with academic institutions, the company intends to support the training of future battery engineers and technicians.
