Toshiba plans to double its hard drive production capacity in the upcoming fiscal year, which begins on April 1, 2027. The company will invest approximately $380 million into its manufacturing facilities located in the Philippines to support this expansion.
This initiative marks the first major investment of its kind for the company in five years. Toshiba currently holds a market share of slightly over 10% in terms of capacity and aims to increase this figure to 30% in the future.
The expansion project includes the deployment of new production lines and the introduction of hard drives with 40% higher capacity. Toshiba also plans to automate its manufacturing processes, aiming to reduce labor requirements by 40% and improve yield rates.
The company has set long-term product development goals, targeting the release of 65 TB hard drives by 2030, followed by 100 TB models. These efforts align with broader industry trends, as IDC forecasts a fourfold increase in global data generation by 2030.
Competitors are also scaling operations to meet rising demand. Western Digital has announced plans to invest $1 billion in Japan by the end of the decade to advance technology development, while Seagate has reported that its server drive production is booked through 2028.
