Tim Cook officially stepped down as Apple CEO on September 1, passing the leadership role to John Ternus. The transition occurred eight days before the launch of the iPhone Duo, a timing Cook chose to provide his successor with a strategic advantage.
Cook noted that the succession planning began several years ago. The company aimed to execute a textbook transition that could serve as a model for future leadership changes. According to Cook, the process has unfolded largely as he envisioned.
John Ternus previously served as the head of hardware engineering at Apple. Upon taking the helm, he received advice from Cook similar to what Steve Jobs once offered him: avoid simply imitating a predecessor and instead focus on areas where one can create the most value by leveraging personal strengths.
