ThinkOn Inc. is expanding its VMware-based cloud model to support private AI infrastructure. The company utilizes VMware Cloud Foundation as a unified control plane for both its existing private cloud services and new AI offerings, aiming to address data sovereignty and regulatory compliance for its clients.
The firm currently provides the infrastructure for Canada’s Sovereign AI Platform, which supports thousands of federal employees across 23 departments. According to founder Craig McLellan, the company receives three to four inquiries per week, with approximately half of these requests specifically focused on private AI services.
The company emphasizes a strategy of matching graphics processing unit capacity to specific workload requirements rather than relying solely on high-end hardware. Clients are currently utilizing various GPU models, including A-series, B-series, and H-series, to optimize operational costs while maintaining control over their data.
ThinkOn combines its VMware infrastructure with Canadian data centers and local engineering teams to meet jurisdictional requirements. This approach is designed to provide customers with unfettered access to their operating infrastructure, which the company identifies as a fundamental test for digital sovereignty.
