A user reported a failure involving a Thermal Grizzly WireView adapter connected to a Radeon RX 7900 XTX graphics card. The device, which monitors power consumption and voltage, showed visible signs of burning and melted plastic on the 8-pin connectors located on the GPU side. The owner confirmed that the connectors were fully inserted before the incident, which was preceded by system freezes and black screens.

The WireView adapter acts as an intermediary between the power supply cables and the graphics card. This configuration introduces additional electrical contacts into the power delivery path. Potential causes for the overheating include increased contact resistance, poor electrical connections, or a defect within the adapter itself. Thermal Grizzly has reached out to the user to investigate the damaged hardware.

In a separate development, modders recently demonstrated an RTX 5090 running on three 8-pin connectors soldered directly to the PCB. This modified setup allowed the card to reach 3,400 MHz and draw up to 900W. While this experiment highlights the capabilities of 8-pin connectors under specific conditions, it represents an extreme modification rather than a standard configuration.
