Apple has officially announced the iPhone Duo, its first device featuring a folding screen. The new smartphone utilizes a custom nano-texture display material designed to minimize the visibility of the screen crease.

The name Duo has a long history in consumer electronics. Apple previously used it for the PowerBook Duo, an ultraportable laptop launched in 1992, and the MagSafe Duo wireless charger, which was discontinued in late 2023.

Other companies have also utilized the branding. Microsoft launched the Surface Duo in 2020, while Asus released the ROG Zephyrus Duo and ZenBook Pro Duo gaming laptops. The NEC TurboDuo console debuted in 1993, and Google operated the Duo VoIP service from 2016 to 2022.

Recent market entries include the Pebble 2 Duo smartwatch and the Retroid Pocket Duo, a dual-screen handheld console. Additionally, iRobot showcased a prototype Roomba Duo at IFA 2026, which features a primary cleaning unit and a smaller, deployable robot.
