Global venture capital spending reached nearly $680 billion through the third quarter of 2026. Despite this record investment, the number of deals for seed and early-stage startups has declined. Capital is increasingly concentrated in large funding rounds of $1 billion or more, which accounted for approximately one-third of all funding in the third quarter.

In North America, the largest startup market, deal counts fell 16 percent year over year and 14 percent quarter over quarter in the third quarter of 2026. This represents the lowest quarterly total since 2023. Conversely, total funding in the region rose 50 percent year over year to $92 billion, driven by growth in late-stage financing.

The trend of rising investment dollars alongside falling deal counts is particularly evident in Series B funding, which reached a multiyear high in total capital while trending toward a multiyear low in deal volume. Similar patterns are observed in seed and Series A rounds, where funds are increasingly directed toward larger transactions rather than a broader range of companies.

Anthropic is scheduled to launch an initial public offering this month, with a potential valuation of $2 trillion. This event serves as a significant indicator for public market sentiment toward the AI-driven companies that have dominated venture capital activity throughout the year.
