The Securities and Exchange Commission of Thailand has finalized the regulatory framework for cryptocurrency exchange-traded funds. On October 8, 2026, the regulator issued 11 notifications detailing the operational requirements for these financial products.
Under the new rules, ETFs must be passive and track a single asset. Initially, only Bitcoin and Ethereum are eligible as underlying assets. Funds are required to maintain an average net exposure of at least 80% of their net asset value to the tracked cryptocurrency throughout the accounting year.
All trading must take place on the Stock Exchange of Thailand. Furthermore, the underlying digital assets must be held by local custodians supervised by the SEC. The framework also mandates investor protection measures, including suitability assessments and risk education.
While the rules become effective on October 16, 2026, no crypto ETFs have launched yet. Asset managers are currently in the process of finalizing their setups and seeking the necessary regulatory approvals to begin operations.
