Texas Governor Greg Abbott has ordered the state's Commission on Environmental Quality to halt the processing of all new data center permit applications. This measure is intended to provide the Electric Reliability Council of Texas with sufficient time to conduct a comprehensive audit of grid connection requests.

The primary objective of this suspension is to ensure that future data center projects do not compromise the stability or security of the state's power grid. The findings from the power grid audit will also serve as a foundation for a separate water resource audit conducted by the Texas Water Development Board.

Current state regulations require data center operators to cover all associated power infrastructure costs to prevent burdening local residents with higher utility bills. Furthermore, companies are prohibited from utilizing water resources designated for local community needs and must strictly adhere to reporting requirements regarding their total power and water consumption.
