Tether is developing a decentralized search engine called Hypersearch. The project relies on distributed hash table architecture to process queries across a network of nodes, eliminating the need for a central server.
The system utilizes the Kademlia DHT protocol, Tether’s HyperDHT infrastructure, and the Holepunch stack. This setup allows for direct peer-to-peer connections and supports various data types, including text, images, and location information.
CEO Paolo Ardoino announced the initiative on April 7, 2026. By May 14, the team demonstrated a functional search engine for Wikipedia. The project is currently in early-stage development with an open-source codebase.
Hypersearch joins Tether’s existing peer-to-peer product suite, which includes the encrypted messaging app Keet and the password manager PearPass. The company is currently hiring engineers with expertise in P2P networking and data structures.
