Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced an update to the specifications of the company's AI5 chip. The memory capacity for the hardware has been increased from 72GB to 96GB. Musk explained that the decision to raise the capacity was made to avoid being the only company utilizing the minimum 72GB configuration for the LPDDR5 memory standard.
The AI5 chip is central to Tesla's autonomous driving and robotics strategy, including the Optimus humanoid robot. The chip completed tape-out in April. Musk claims that a single AI5 chip matches the performance of NVIDIA's Hopper GPU, while a dual-chip setup is comparable to the Blackwell architecture. He also stated that the chip offers three times the performance per watt compared to NVIDIA hardware.
Musk previously noted that memory for both AI5 and AI6 chips was reduced to ensure supply chain stability amid global shortages. The AI6 chip currently features 144GB of LP6 memory. According to Musk, the overall cost of the AI5 chip is approximately 10% of the cost of competing NVIDIA products. The executive continues to oversee the design and development of these proprietary AI solutions.
