Tesla has officially enabled the integration of the Cybertruck Powershare feature with Powerwall 3 solar energy storage systems. This update allows the electric pickup to function as a backup power source for homes already equipped with Tesla's stationary storage units.
The combined system can extend household backup power duration to more than 3 days. Previously, users were forced to choose between using the Cybertruck for home power or relying on their existing Powerwall setup, as the two systems could not operate simultaneously.
The feature was originally announced in late 2023, but the rollout faced a one-year delay. Tesla initially planned to introduce compatibility in 2025, following an October 2024 announcement, but the integration was postponed until now.
Wes Morrill, lead engineer for the Cybertruck, attributed the delay to the technical complexity of coordinating two grid-forming devices. The development required ensuring safe power delivery without network connectivity and managing compatibility across different hardware generations.
