Tesla is expanding its Powershare Home Backup feature to include Model 3 and Model Y vehicles. Previously, this capability was restricted exclusively to the Cybertruck. To utilize the system, users must own a Powerwall 3, though the company plans to add support for Powerwall 2 and Powerwall Plus in the near future.
The feature allows the vehicle battery to provide backup power during outages. According to Tesla, Model 3 and Model Y vehicles can extend home energy supply for over two days. This duration is shorter than the three-day backup capacity that the Cybertruck offers. The company notes that the feature is currently limited to the US and Puerto Rico.
Hardware compatibility is a key constraint for the rollout. Tesla guarantees the feature only for Model 3 and Model Y units ordered on or after October 1st, as these vehicles are equipped with the necessary PCS2 Lite inverter. Older models lack this specific hardware. Furthermore, the feature is not available for Model S or Model X vehicles.
While Tesla is entering the vehicle-to-home power market, other manufacturers have established similar technologies. Kia and GM offer vehicle-to-home capabilities, and the Nissan Leaf introduced power-to-grid charging years ago. Currently, Tesla’s Powershare Grid Support remains a feature exclusive to the Cybertruck.
