Tesla has officially activated the Powershare Home Backup feature for Model 3 and Model Y vehicles. This functionality allows the cars to supply electricity to a home during grid outages, provided the owner uses a Powerwall 3 and a Wall Connector.
The feature is guaranteed for Model 3 and Model Y vehicles ordered in the United States and Puerto Rico on or after October 1, 2026. For older models, compatibility depends on the presence of the PCS2 Lite inverter, which owners can verify via the vehicle's software menu.
According to Tesla, a Model 3 or Model Y with a 90% charge can extend home backup by over two days for a household consuming 30 kWh per day. The system supports a maximum continuous output of 11.52 kW.
Existing owners of a Powerwall 3 and a Wall Connector do not need additional hardware to enable the service, though they must contact Tesla support. The Cybertruck remains compatible with the system, offering over three days of backup capacity.
