Tesla has officially discontinued its Solar Roof product, citing a lack of financial viability. The company stopped supplying solar tiles to its network of certified third-party installers in August, redirecting its website traffic to conventional solar panel offerings.

Over a seven-year period, approximately 3,000 Solar Roof systems were installed across the United States. This volume peaked at 21 to 32 installations per week, failing to meet the target of 1,000 weekly installations previously projected by Elon Musk for the 2019–2020 period.

Certified contractors face significant financial losses, with some reporting investments of hundreds of thousands of dollars in specialized training, tooling, and crew development. Unlike standard solar systems that take two days to install, the Solar Roof required over two weeks per project.

While Tesla has committed to honoring existing warranties and providing replacement parts, installers remain skeptical about long-term support. Contractors now face the challenge of redesigning active projects and managing the maintenance of a discontinued product for the next two decades.
