A 2024 Tesla Model X was involved in a fatal collision with a motorcyclist in Moraine on July 23, 2025. According to data submitted by Tesla to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the vehicle's driver-assist system was verified as engaged at the time of the incident.
The crash occurred at approximately 8:15 p.m. at the intersection of Germantown Pike and Hemple Road. The 55-year-old motorcyclist, Leonidas Davis, died at the scene. Local police reports initially identified the Tesla only as a sedan and did not mention the use of any driver-assist technology.
Tesla's report to federal regulators confirms a pre-crash speed of 49 mph. While the company provided telematics, video, and police records to the agency, it redacted the crash narrative, software version, and operational details, citing confidential business information.
This incident is part of a broader investigation into Tesla's crash reporting practices. The company is required to report any accidents where a Level 2 driver-assist system was active within 30 seconds of impact. Out of 3,953 reports filed, nearly all narratives remain redacted.
