Tesla and SpaceX are establishing a dedicated R&D wafer fabrication facility, known as Terafab, at the Texas Gigafactory. Elon Musk stated that the primary objective of this facility is to accelerate the chip development cycle by testing approximately 10 new chip designs annually.

The facility integrates wafer manufacturing, testing, packaging, and lithography mask production within a single building. This setup allows the engineering teams to iterate on chip designs and produce new masks without interrupting the development loop, effectively shortening the traditional two-year cycle from design to mass production.

Musk noted that the initiative focuses on high-risk, high-reward projects rather than immediate mass production of all 10 designs. The company plans to start with existing equipment, modifying it for higher capacity, and eventually developing custom hardware to address production bottlenecks.

The broader Terafab project includes two separate factories, each intended to mass-produce specific chips. These components are slated to support Tesla vehicles, Optimus humanoid robots, and AI data centers for space operations. Musk acknowledged that achieving this full operational scale will likely take several years.
