Tesla has reduced the RAM capacity in its Optimus humanoid robots to ensure mass production and manage rising component costs. The company faced a shortage of memory chips amid the ongoing AI boom.
For the version using the AI5 processor, the LPDDR5 memory was initially cut by half to 72 GB, though Tesla later adjusted this to 96 GB. The model equipped with the AI6 processor saw its LPDDR6 memory reduced by one-third to 144 GB.
Elon Musk stated that these changes are expected to have a minimal impact on robot performance. He noted that memory bandwidth remains a more significant bottleneck for the system than total capacity.
The decision follows comments from Micron Technology CEO Sanjay Mehrotra, who estimated that each humanoid robot would require at least 200 GB of memory to function effectively.
