Tesla has officially reduced the RAM capacity for its upcoming AI5 and AI6 chips, which are designed to power the Optimus humanoid robots. The company cut the memory for the AI5 chip by half to 72 GB of LP5, while the AI6 chip saw a threefold reduction to 144 GB of LP6.
Elon Musk stated that this decision was necessary to secure enough memory supply for mass production and to significantly lower the manufacturing costs of the robots. Despite the reduction in total capacity, the company claims that the memory bandwidth remains unchanged in the new hardware configurations.
Musk noted that the performance impact on Optimus is expected to be minimal, as memory bandwidth is often a more critical bottleneck for AI operations than total capacity. This move addresses concerns regarding the massive memory requirements for the future deployment of millions of humanoid robots.
