Tesla has expanded its Powershare Home Backup feature to include Model 3 and Model Y vehicles in the US. Previously, this capability was exclusive to the Cybertruck, allowing the vehicle to serve as a power source for a home during grid outages.
The system provides up to 11.5 kW of continuous power. Tesla estimates that Premium and Performance versions can support a household consuming 30 kWh daily for over two days, while standard models offer up to two days of backup, depending on charge levels and energy usage.
Compatibility is guaranteed for Model 3 and Model Y vehicles ordered in the US and Puerto Rico on or after October 1, 2026. Some older vehicles may be compatible based on their hardware, though Tesla does not provide a guarantee for these units.
To utilize the feature, owners must have a Tesla Powerwall 3 and a compatible Tesla Wall Connector installed. Users are required to contact Tesla support for activation. Support for Powerwall 2 and Powerwall + systems is currently in development.
The Powershare function is distinct from vehicle-to-grid (V2G) capabilities, which are not currently available for these models. Additionally, this home backup system is separate from the vehicle-to-load (V2L) adapter introduced for the Model Y Premium in August.
