Tesla has released a software update introducing an emergency drive-away feature for its vehicles. This function allows drivers to override the charging lock and drive away while the charging cable is still connected to the port. The system is designed to enable a quick escape during critical situations, though it will cause damage to both the vehicle and the charging handle.
When a driver shifts into drive, the vehicle triggers an emergency alert requiring confirmation. Tesla noted that the feature is intended strictly for emergencies, warning that deliberate misuse will result in unspecified penalties. For the time being, the update is available exclusively to users in the United States.
The development follows a mass shooting at a Supercharger station in Twin Falls, Idaho, in August, which resulted in four deaths and seven injuries. Prior to this official update, third-party companies like EVject attempted to market breakaway adapters. Tesla previously sued EVject over safety concerns regarding potential overheating, though the automaker later dropped the legal case.
