Tesla has released a new software update, version 2026.38.3, introducing the Emergency Drive Away feature. This function allows drivers to shift their vehicles into drive mode and move away from a charging station even if the charging cable remains physically connected to the car.
The manufacturer developed this update following a fatal shooting incident at a charging station two months ago. The system is intended strictly for emergency situations where a driver needs to evacuate a location quickly. Tesla emphasizes that using this feature will cause damage to both the vehicle and the Supercharger equipment.
Previously, Tesla software restricted shifting out of park mode while a charging cable was connected. Drivers were required to unlock and remove the connector before moving. With the new update, users can initiate the emergency departure via a button on the touchscreen interface.
Tesla has confirmed that the feature is currently limited to the United States market. The company has not provided information regarding a potential international rollout. Tesla also noted that deliberate misuse of the emergency function will result in penalties, although specific consequences were not disclosed.
