TDK Corporation has unveiled a direct retinal projection display technology designed for smart glasses. The system utilizes a flat meta-optic mirror featuring nanoscale reflectors, which measures 150 nm in thickness. This component can be integrated directly into standard lenses, maintaining a visible-light transmittance of about 80 percent for a natural look.

The new approach replaces traditional curved mirrors that previously hindered the design of compact smart eyewear. By using a planar structure with specific nanoscale reflectors, the device adjusts light reflection angles based on the mirror's position. This allows laser light from various angles to be directed onto the retina, facilitating a more streamlined form factor.

TDK has also developed an ultra-compact full-color laser module and a control device capable of 4K resolution. These components are essential for the operation of the direct retinal projection system. The company intends to showcase a prototype of this technology at the CEATEC 2026 event starting October 13, 2026, and at the electronica exhibition from November 10 to 13, 2026.
