TDK has unveiled a direct retinal projection (DRP) display utilizing a meta-optical mirror. This flat mirror is 150 nm thick and integrated directly into eyeglass lenses. It features a light transmittance of approximately 80%, allowing smart glasses to maintain transparency similar to standard optical lenses for daily wear.

The technology employs a metasurface consisting of sub-wavelength artificial atoms. This design eliminates the need for the curvature and thickness required by traditional optics. The system redirects laser light to the retina while preventing image leakage, ensuring that content remains private and invisible to people standing in front of the user.

TDK has developed a compact full-color laser module and a control device capable of 4K resolution. The company has entered a business partnership with QD Laser to combine their respective patent portfolios and accelerate the development of next-generation RGB modules and optical systems for smart glasses.

Prototypes of the DRP smart glasses will be showcased at the CEATEC exhibition on October 13 and at the electronica event on November 10. While the current meta-optical mirror supports only monochrome mode, TDK intends to demonstrate full-color functionality and initiate mass production within the next few years.
