The Swiss Financial Market Supervisory Authority (FINMA) has officially approved the country's first Bitcoin exchange-traded fund (ETF) available to retail investors. This fund is designed to invest directly in Bitcoin, marking a major shift in the local regulatory landscape for digital asset products.

While the regulator did not disclose the specific issuer of the approved fund, it confirmed that several providers have submitted applications for similar products. The decision follows a trend of increasing interest in cryptocurrency investments among market participants in Switzerland.

Previously, in 2021, FINMA authorized a fund for qualified investors that focused on a basket of cryptocurrencies. The regulator noted that Bitcoin's high trading volume and long history justified an exemption from standard risk-diversification requirements for that specific fund.

Despite the approval, FINMA issued a warning regarding the inherent market risks associated with Bitcoin, highlighting the high volatility of digital assets. The regulator emphasized that investors could face a significant loss of capital when participating in such funds.

Switzerland continues to strengthen its position as a crypto-friendly jurisdiction. Notably, in 2023, the city of Lugano began accepting Bitcoin and Tether payments for all municipal fees, demonstrating the country's ongoing integration of digital assets into its financial infrastructure.
