On October 7, 2026, Stacks founder Muneeb Ali unveiled the Satoshi Upgrades, a strategic plan to transform Stacks into a hub for Bitcoin capital markets by 2030. The initiative focuses on three main pillars: developing yield generation and collateralization, enhancing privacy for institutional transactions, and implementing post-quantum security measures. All activities are designed to settle directly on the Bitcoin base layer.
The vision builds on the PoX-5 hard fork, which launched on July 30, 2026, and introduced protocol bonds. The Genesis Bond offering concluded in September 2026, raising approximately 230 BTC from institutional participants including 21Shares, HashKey Cloud, and UTXO Management. Subsequently, Stacks opened Bond 2 in October 2026 with a capacity of 500 BTC to support liquid staking.
Leadership changes are scheduled for October 15, 2026, when Muneeb Ali will assume the role of CEO at Stacks Labs, succeeding Alex Miller, who will transition to an advisory position. Ali intends to focus on institutional business development and organizational restructuring. Additionally, the company plans to transfer its intellectual property to the Stacks Endowment, an entity without shareholders.
A forthcoming two-year roadmap will detail the implementation of privacy features, post-quantum technology, and the expansion of yield markets. The STX token will serve as a rate-limiting factor for capital market activities. The primary objective is to enable Bitcoin holders to earn self-custodial yield and access BTC-backed lending without selling their assets or relinquishing custody.
