SpaceX is currently in negotiations with at least one major US network infrastructure provider to utilize approximately 80,000 base stations for its Starlink Mobile project. This initiative aims to establish a fourth national wireless carrier, directly competing with established industry leaders such as AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon.

According to Bloomberg, the company is discussing lease agreements for cellular towers with Crown Castle, one of the largest tower owners in the country alongside American Tower and Vertical Bridge Holdings. Leasing existing infrastructure is a standard industry practice, as it is more cost-effective than building and maintaining proprietary networks.

Elon Musk has confirmed plans to build an independent mobile carrier from the ground up. To support this, SpaceX has acquired low-frequency radio spectrum and received authorization from the FCC to launch 15,000 satellites designed to provide direct-to-cell connectivity for standard mobile devices.

The integration of satellite technology with a terrestrial network of base stations is intended to ensure ubiquitous coverage. Musk stated that these combined efforts will enable Starlink Mobile to operate as a major mobile service provider across the United States wherever the company is legally permitted to function.
